A Trip to the Mer Bleue

Updated: Aug 7, 2021

Always a Great Visit to the Bog

Broad-Leaved Arrowhead/Wapato (Sagittaria latifolia) Dewberry Trail, Mer Bleue Conservation Area, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Ramsar site no. 755.

Spent the day hiking the Northern Ridge of the Mer Blue Bog & almost got lost on a trail that brought me to the marsh's edge deep in the woods. Here I found the Wapato in full bloom but couldn't find a way to get around the water finally of the trail. Prior to getting to the Bog I came across a number of Monarch Butterflies at the flowers that were at the edge of farmer's fields. There were quite a number of Monarchs fluttering & feeding on the Milkweed plants that were in open fields along the trail.

Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) on the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail, Ontario, Canada. Conservation Status: imperiled (S2N,S4B) in Ontario, CA (NatureServe).

I always enjoy my visits to the Mer Bleue it is one of my most cherished places to visit in Ottawa and it is the second largest protected area of our beautiful city.
