Exploring the Island Called Petrie

Marshes & Sandy Beaches of Petrie Island

Bronzed Tiger Beetle (Cicindela repanda) Petrie Island, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The island is a popular location if one wants to enjoy the beaches or the nature that thrives in the wetland complex. Exploring Petrie Island is always a good time. The island is a complex of marshes & varied wetland habitats on the Ottawa River in the east end of the city. One of my favourite endeavours is to chase & photograph the frisky Tiger Beetles that populate the sandy beach shores of the Ottawa River. Even on the first weekend of Autumn the little guys are out hunting down their prey, flying, jumping & running so very fast. We are so very lucky to have a great variety of Tiger Beetles among the rare sandy locations of the Ottawa Valley. The river shoreline is always a good local to discover these little beetles doing their thing of hunting & behaviour antics that make them so very special & holding my heart to be a nature lover.

Lots of American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) can be found in the marsh wetlands.

A Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is found stalking prey in the high reeds of the marshes at Petrie Island, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
